It’s actually manufactured in Germany by a company called Heuer. Woodward Fab has a very interesting forged steel vise. Instead, it has a large flat striking surface. It too has an anvil feature, although unlike the Palmgren example earlier, the Wilton does not have a typical anvil horn. A thrust bearing is incorporated and that makes it easier to apply and release the clamping force. What’s different here is the vise has a round precision machined slide. The base also has a 360-degree swivel feature. This vise is manufactured from 60,000 PSI ductile iron and it features a jaw width of 6.5 inches. Mechanic’s VisesĪ good example of a vise for mechanics is the Wilton 28812HK. Basically, this is metalworking vise that allows you to hold material like tubing in place while you work on it. It has a 3.5-inch pipe jaw opening along with a 4.5-inch v-jaw opening. The main body swivels 360 degrees and the vise head rotates 360 degrees. The body is cast iron and it features five-inch jaws. A good example of one that offers both of these features is the Baileigh Industrial BV-5P. You can get vises that swivel and you also get them with a rotating head. Basically, you can beat on it much as the same as you would an anvil. The anvil end has a built-in horn and a step. On the end opposite the jaws, the vise is equipped with a built-in anvil that’s manufactured with a hardened face. A really good example is the Palmgren Anvil Vise. That’s why some vises have an “anvil” feature. And since the bodies are built from cast iron, if you hit with a large enough hammer with sufficient force, and hit it enough times you can eventually fracture it. The operating screw is regularly manufactured from steel. Jaw inserts are regularly manufactured from induction hardened steel. These vises (and many others) were and are constructed with a body and jaws manufactured from cast iron. Pete told me they’re a great vise, but each and every one was broken because someone figured it was an anvil. I asked what was up with that pile of vises (mostly because I had one at the time and I currently still have two of them). Sitting in a corner of the shop was a small pile of Poland (now called Bison) “warranty” bench vises. One day when he wasn’t on the road, I went to visit him at the warehouse. And he spent most of his time on the road dealing with the installation of shop equipment and looking after service and warranty claims for various tools and pieces of equipment. Allow me to explain:ĭecades ago, my father-in-law Pete worked for a large national auto parts and tool distributor. They serve all sorts of duties and they can handle all sorts of tasks. Just about everyone reading this will have one or two of them in the shop or in a trailer (or even mounted on a truck bed or perhaps on a hitch receiver). It was later reprinted in The Best from Fantasy and Science Fiction, 9th series (1960), the Fifth Annual of the Year's Best Science Fiction (1960), Best Articles and Stories (1961), Literary Cavalcade (1961), The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume One, 1929–1964 (1970), and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction: A 30-Year Retrospective (1980). The short story "Flowers for Algernon" was first published as the lead story in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. Five publishers rejected the story over the course of a year until it was published by Harcourt in 1966. Again, Keyes refused and gave Doubleday back their advance. Keyes worked on the expanded novel between 19 and first tried to sell it to Doubleday, but they also wanted to change the ending. Keyes refused to make the change and sold the story to The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction instead. When the story was submitted to Galaxy, however, editor Horace Gold suggested changing the ending so that Charlie retained his intelligence, married Alice Kinnian, and lived happily ever after. In 1958, Keyes was approached by Galaxy Science Fiction magazine to write a story, at which point the elements of Flowers for Algernon fell into place. As he was developing his story, he satirically transformed his frustrating Tests and Measurements advisor into Burt, the tester who similarly frustrates Charlie. Events that Charlie experiences were also based on Keyes's life, including the Rorschach test and Charlie's frustration with it, which was inspired by Keyes' past experience with the test when he was exploring the causes of his anxiety as a college student. Nemur and Strauss, the scientists who develop the intelligence-enhancing surgery in the story, were based on professors Keyes met while in graduate school. The character of Algernon was inspired by a university dissection class, and the name was inspired by the poet Algernon Charles Swinburne. It was a heart-breaker." Ĭharacters in the book were based on people in Keyes's life. Keyes said that "When he came back to school, he had lost it all. Keyes also witnessed the dramatic change in another learning-disabled student who regressed after he was removed from regular lessons. His goal was to elevate such a character to the heights of genius at the cost of being disconnected before having them lose it all.Ī pivotal moment occurred in 1957 while Keyes was teaching English to students with special needs, and one of them asked if it would be possible for the student to be put into an ordinary class ( mainstreamed) if he worked hard and became smart. He therefore made his story's main character a person who was initially "lowborn" (a mentally disabled young man) who then became a "highborn" after the intelligence-enhancing procedures. He said that he was inspired by Aristotle's dictum in the Poetics, which states that a tragedy can only occur for the highborn, because one could only have a tragic fall from a great height. Keyes, in his 1999 memoir Algernon, Charlie and I: A Writer's Journey, explains more about his creative writing process and relates key insights for the conception of Flowers for Algernon. Based on these considerations, Keyes further developed his ideas for Flowers for Algernon by transforming the initial concept into what Keyes asserted as "a classic tragedy". Keyes felt that his education was driving a wedge between himself and his parents, and this led him to wonder what would happen if it were possible to increase a person's intelligence. The ideas for Flowers for Algernon developed over 14 years and were inspired by events in Keyes's life, starting in 1945 with Keyes's conflict with his parents, who were pushing a pre-medical education despite his desire to pursue a writing career. Īlthough the book has often been challenged for removal from libraries in the United States and Canada, sometimes successfully, it is frequently taught in schools around the world and has been adapted many times for television, theater, radio and as the Academy Award-winning film Charly. The story is told by a series of progress reports written by Charlie Gordon, the first human subject for the surgery, and it touches on ethical and moral themes such as the treatment of the mentally disabled. Īlgernon is a laboratory mouse who has undergone surgery to increase his intelligence. The novel was published in 1966 and was joint winner of that year's Nebula Award for Best Novel (with Babel-17). The short story, written in 1958 and first published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1960. Well there are summer blends of washer solvent and winter blends of washer solvent. So although it would keep the washer system from freezing, it could do a lot of damage to the car. Now this business of taking anti-freeze like you would put in the radiator and putting it in the windshield washer – not a good idea at all! See, anti-freeze often can damage paint. A lot of cars didn’t have them, but all cars have them today. See, back in the day when this classic was a car, windshield washers were actually optional. Well, that’s absolutely false up to a point. You have questions, Pat Goss has answers.ĭo I need to add anti-freeze to my windshield washer fluid during the winter? So, now you know what to do with your washer fluid when the weather gets cold. In this video, Pat Goss reveals if adding anti-freeze to washer fluid is a sound or foolish idea. If it is mostly water and could easily freeze and burst hoses, why not add anti-freeze to the washer fluid reservoir? It only cost a few dollars and could save a ton in repair costs. The same logic then would seem to apply to your windshield washer fluid. If it is not, you run the risk of water freezing in your engine and causing catastrophic damage. Snow, slush, ice and road salt can quickly make a windshield impossible to see through, and frequent washing with high-potency wiper fluid designed for winter conditions is the only way to clear away the muck so you can see where you’re going.įor more on your vehicle’s various fluids, check out the video below. In the winter, especially if you live in a cold-weather climate, it is of utmost importance to keep your vehicle’s anti-freeze at the proper levels. Some people, however, use ingredients like white vinegar and distilled water to clean windshields without the use of toxic fluids.ĭespite the toxicity of over-the-counter wiper fluids, it can be downright dangerous to drive without them in many parts of the country, especially during the winter. We have no experience with these homemade brews and can’t vouch for their effectiveness. Those substances can damage paint finishes as well as some plastic and rubber parts on vehicles.īecause of health and environmental concerns, some vehicle owners resort to making their own wiper fluid from non-toxic substances. Wiper fluid also usually includes a dose of ethylene glycol, a toxic alcohol used in automotive antifreeze. The bad news about wiper fluid is that it’s typically made of ethanol or methanol, which are poisonous for people and animals and can be damaging to the environment. Windshield Washer Fluid Works Better But Comes at a Priceįluids formulated specifically for cleaning windshields generally do a better job of cleaning than just water and usually won’t freeze until 20 degrees below zero or colder. So even if you live in a very warm climate, keep in mind those trips to Grandma’s in Minneapolis you don’t want to get stuck in a snowstorm without the ability to clean your windshield because you didn’t want to stop at the store to pick some washer fluid. Its main drawbacks are its lack of cleaning solvents and detergents and that it freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, rendering the windshield-washing system on your vehicle useless during cold weather. The main benefits of water are that it’s cheaper than windshield washer fluid and more compatible with the environment. The ingredients in washer fluid work together to give you a clean, streak-free windshield no matter how cold it is outside. Many also contain small amounts of ethanol or antifreeze made from methylated spirits to keep the product from freezing during the winter months. Most products are made of methanol and other alcohols like ethylene glycol. Windshield washer fluid contains ingredients that are meant to clean up those stubborn messes. If you live in a place where the temperature never gets down to freezing, you might be able to get by with plain water - but even then, water doesn’t have the cleaning power of specialized cleaning fluid for removing bugs, bird droppings, road grime and other crud that collects on windshields. Related: More Maintenance Coverage Windshield Washer Fluid Versus Plain Water Is plain water an acceptable substitute for windshield washer fluid, though? Water is readily available almost anywhere, and topping off your reservoir with it would save you from needing to make a trip to the store. CARS.COM - If you have ever run out of windshield washer fluid when you didn’t have any more on hand, you may have wondered whether you really need special fluid or if you could just use plain water instead. In-browser editing & powerful manipulation, full text search within saved pages, direct access to the saved archives, the sidebar, the specialized capture options and quite a bit more require features (XUL-based and otherwise) that Mozilla won't implement. There's zero hope of implementing something like the unfortunately named Scrapbook Plus & Scrapbook X research addons. How is that different between XUL and WebExtensions? With the new API, you still have to make sure not to install malicious add-ons. Currently, any WebExtension which asks for the proper permission can just read the content of your banking websites if it wants, and send what it finds (your social security number, your password, your bank account numbers, etc) to an attacker. I'm also kind of curious about how the security angle works. I think Mozilla absolutely made the right choice I just don't think we can focus exclusively on the benefits and pretend that the costs don't exist. Pretending that it is, is harmful there are very real drawbacks which have to be weighed up against the advantages of a cleaner API which it's easier to maintain and which might be more secure. It's not even "good for" the people who "only" had to invest hours into learning a new workflow with a new set of add-ons. I'm just saying that when Mozilla decided to break the browser for many people, it wasn't "good for" the people who ended up with a browser which doesn't let them do what they want. I'm one of the people who didn't depend on any add-ons which aren't available anymore I just had to update the add-on I wrote to work with the new API, which was easy because it's one of those add-ons which essentially just needs some javascript to be injected into all web pages. I'm not trying to argue that Firefox shouldn't have deprecated XUL or NPAPI. But the browser’s first responsibility to the user is primum non nocere: “first, do no harm.” And those old APIs, which were naïvely designed twenty years ago in a time when the Internet was far less weaponized than it is today, were exposing an awful lot of people to a great deal of harm. I lost a couple of these in the move myself. Look, I get it, it sucks to lose an extension you like and rely on. And the bad things were bad enough that it was worth losing the good ones to protect users from them. A more restrictive API means some things extensions used to be able to do aren’t possible anymore, but that’s as true of the bad things as it is of the good. The downside of “extensions can do anything!” is that it means extensions can do, well, anything, including things that are hostile to the user’s interests. If supporting that extension requires exposing the user to security risks. > If someone is most comfortable using their browser with a certain extension for which there is no good WebExtensions-based alternative, how can you say that forcing them to stop using that extension is "good for them"? Saying that change is "good" for users even if the users don't realize it and resist, prevents us from considering the very real negative effects of introducing breaking changes or removing features of our software. The move away from XUL and NPAPI is great for Mozilla, it makes it easier to maintain and develop the browser, it's probably good for extension developers (except for those who now can't port their extension to the new API because it's more limited), but it's not good for users who are forced to take time out of their day to find and alternatives or users who just have to accept that what they were previously using their browser for just isn't possible anymore with Firefox. If someone is most comfortable using their browser with a certain extension for which there is no good WebExtensions-based alternative, how can you say that forcing them to stop using that extension is "good for them"? Even if there is a suitable alternative, which requires re-learning a bunch of things the user is used to, how is that change "good for them"? Saying that "people hate change, even when it's good for them" has to be the most arrogant thing I've read today.
